Filler-gap Dependencies and Island Constraints in Second-language Sentence Processing

چکیده
Second-language (L2) sentence processing may differ from processing in a native language in a variety of ways, and it has been argued that one major difference is that L2 learners can only construct shallow representations that lack structural details (e.g., Clahsen & Felser, 2006 ). The present study challenges this hypothesis by comparing the extent to which advanced L1 Spanish-L2 English learners and English native speakers make use of the relative clause island constraint in constructing fi ller-gap dependencies. In offl ine acceptability judgment and online self-paced reading experiments that used stimuli adapted from Traxler and Pickering ( 1996 ), both the L2 group and the native-speaker control group demonstrated clear evidence for application of the relative clause island constraint. These fi ndings suggest that advanced L2 learners not only build abstract structural representations but also rapidly constrain the active

متن کاملOnline Processing of English Wh-Dependencies by Iranian EFL Learners
To be able to reach the level of ultimate attainment in the second language, learners need to acquire not only the grammar of the L2 but also the language processing mechanisms involved in the comprehension of sentences in real time. Contrary to its importance, very little is known yet about online L2 processing. This study examines whether advanced Iranian learners of English reactivate disloc...
متن کاملFINITENESS AND THE NATURE OF ISLAND CONSTRAINTS* 12-pt 12-pt
Two competing views of island constraints have emerged in recent work. In one, which we will call the accumulation view, islands result from the accumulation of several independently documented processing difficulties, such as the presence of a filler-gap dependency and an especially complex syntactic structure (cf. Kluender (1998, 2004), Hofmeister and Sag (2010)). In a sentence with an island...
متن کاملExtraction from Coordinate Structures: Evidence from Language
1 Introduction Decades of psycholinguistic research have witnessed a sustained interest in whether syntactic island constraints are active during online processing the study of syntactic islands seeks to identify environments in which filler-gap dependencies are banned. But to these generalizations, there are, of course, exceptions. One of the more resilient island constraints is Ross's (1967) ...
متن کاملLong-Distance Dependencies without Island Constraints Within the tradition of generative grammar, filler-gap constructions
Within the tradition of generative grammar, filler-gap constructions and especially island constraints (Ross 1967) have played a crucial role in shaping the grammar and in arguing for a rich system of innate constraints that are specific to language. The existence of island phenomena has given rise to such principles as `Subjacency' (1), `Superiority' (2) (commonly recast as `Attract Closest') ...
